For drivers: what a shift link records

What happens when you tap Start on a shift link, who can see it, how long it is kept and what is never recorded.

Guides are in English for now. The rest of the site is translated.

Someone who owns or runs a vehicle may give you a link and ask you to tap Start when you take the keys. This guide says exactly what that does. It is written for you, not for the owner.

  1. The owner of the vehicle has an ATAP account and makes the link.
  2. You open the link on your phone. You do not need an account.
  3. You type a name and tap Start. When you hand over, you tap End.
  4. The owner sees the name you typed and your start and end times.
The owner makes a link for the vehicle. You open it on your phone, type a name and tap Start. Nothing else about you is collected.

What is recorded

  • The name you type. It can be a first name or a nickname. ATAP does not check it.
  • The time you tapped Start and the time you tapped End.
  • Whether the shift ended because you tapped End, because the next driver tapped Start, because the owner ended it, or because it ran too long.

The record is kept for 180 days and then deleted. Nothing else about you is stored. Your phone's location is not used, and the page does not ask for your number, your licence or your photo.

Who can see it

The owner of that vehicle can see your name and your shift times. When someone sends feedback about the vehicle, the owner may see it next to the name of the driver who was on shift at that moment. That can be a complaint or praise. The person who sent it never learns your name, and you never see who sent it.

If the owner belongs to an organisation, such as a school transport committee or a fleet, the other people in it can see only whether someone is on shift and how many shifts started in the last week. They do not see your name. Names stay with the owner of the vehicle.

Starting and ending a shift

  1. Open the link. Type your name. Tap Start.
  2. When you hand the vehicle to someone else, tap End, or let the next driver tap Start. Their Start closes yours.
  3. If nobody ends a shift, it closes by itself after 16 hours, and the owner is told about it the next daytime.
  4. If you tapped Start by mistake, tap End straight away and tell the owner.

If you are not comfortable with it

You can ask the owner not to use shift links, or to leave you out. Rules about monitoring staff depend on your employer and your contract, and this guide is not legal advice. If you want a record removed before it expires, ask the owner, or write to us through the contact page.
