Owners meet four papers: the registration certificate, insurance, the pollution certificate and, for some vehicles, a fitness certificate. ATAP uses the first to check who owns a vehicle and offers a reminder for the other three. This guide explains each and what ATAP does with it.

  1. You send the registration certificate and a photo when you add a vehicle.
  2. A person at ATAP checks them and approves or rejects the claim.
  3. You may type in expiry dates for insurance, pollution and fitness.
  4. If you tick the box, ATAP sends reminders before each date.
The certificate proves ownership once. The three expiry dates are typed in by you, and reminders are off until you switch them on.

The four papers in plain words

  1. Registration certificate, or RC. It names the registered owner and carries the plate number. ATAP asks for a photo of it, only to check the plate and the owner.
  2. Insurance. It has an end date. ATAP does not ask for the policy, only for the date if you want a reminder.
  3. Pollution under control certificate, or PUC. It has an end date and is renewed on a cycle set by the rules that apply to your vehicle.
  4. Fitness certificate. Some vehicles, such as buses, cabs and trucks, need one. It also has an end date. Check with your regional transport office, or RTO, whether yours does.

What ATAP stores

The photo of the registration certificate and the photo of the vehicle are used for the check and then deleted. The dates you type are stored against the vehicle so reminders can run. ATAP does not look the dates up and does not check them, so a wrong date gives a wrong reminder.

Reminders are off by default. If you tick the box, ATAP sends a message 15 days and 2 days before each date, only in the daytime, and never twice for the same date. Every reminder has a one click link that switches them off.

Setting the dates

  1. Open your vehicle page and go to Reminders.
  2. Type the end date from each paper you want a reminder for. Leave the others empty.
  3. Tick the box to get reminders. Leave it empty to only keep the dates.
  4. After you renew, type the new date. The reminders start again for the new date.
