Areas, not addresses

How ATAP staff see where reports cluster without ever seeing where one report came from.

Guides are in English for now. The rest of the site is translated.

The report page says that anonymous counts may be used to show hotspots. That sentence can sound like a map of every report. It is not. This guide describes what staff can actually see, the two rules that keep it coarse, and what it is for.

  1. This cell is shown. It holds at least 3 reports from at least 2 different devices in the last 30 days. Staff see the cell and its counts, and no single point inside it.
  2. One report only. The cell stays hidden, so one incident never turns into a place on a map.
  3. Three reports, all from one device. The cell stays hidden, because one person sending several reports is not a pattern.
Invented streets. The dashed lines are the coarse cells. A filled square is a report from one device, a hollow square a report from another.

What staff see

A page that only admins can open lists cells about 2 km wide. Each row gives a count of reports, a count of devices and the middle of the cell. Nothing smaller appears. The page loads no map tiles, and a link opens an outside map at the centre of the cell and not at any report.

The two rules

  • A cell needs 3 or more reports within the last 30 days.
  • Those reports must come from 2 or more different devices. A device here is the anonymous token in a cookie, never a person.

Together they mean a cell cannot exist because of one reporter, however many times that person reports. At least two separate devices have to agree that something keeps happening in the same area.

What is left out

Praise is not counted. Reports that staff have hidden are not counted. Reports sent without a place cannot be counted at all. The vehicle, the plate, the photo and the note are not on the page, and only admins can open the page.

What it is for

It tells staff where reports cluster, so that they can see how the pilot is spreading. Nothing is sent to anyone because of it. No owner is told about a cell, and no driver is scored by one.

The choice to share a place at all is yours each time. Read sharing your location, or not for what the owner sees, and why reports are private for the wider design.
