Putting your sticker on

Where it goes, how to fit it, how to check that it works, and what to do when you sell the vehicle.

An ATAP sticker is a small tag with a QR code on it. Someone behind your vehicle scans it with their phone camera, and the report page opens with your plate already filled in. It takes a few minutes to fit and it only has to be done well once.

What you need

  • Your sticker, and a verified vehicle in the ATAP app. If you have not added a vehicle yet, start at Add a vehicle.
  • A lint free cloth and a little water, or a glass cleaner with no wax in it.
  • A soft card, or your thumb, to press air out from under the sticker.

Suggested

This is our current suggestion, drawn as the rear glass seen from inside the car. We are testing placement in our pilot and will update it with what works.

  1. Low in a rear cornerEither bottom corner works. It stays out of your line of sight and still faces the road behind you.
  2. On the inside of the glassStuck inside, it stays out of the rain, the car wash and the wiper blade.
  3. Outside the wiper sweepIf your car has a rear wiper, keep the sticker outside the dashed fan it sweeps.
  4. On clear glass if you canMost rear glass has fine heater lines. A spot between them, or beside them, gives the cleanest scan.
Never block your own view or a brake light, and follow your local rules on stickers. This is guidance, not a measured specification.

Put it on the inside of the rear glass, low in a corner. Inside, it stays out of the rain, the car wash and the wiper blade, and it is harder to peel off without leaving a mark. Keep it clear of a rear wiper's sweep, away from your heater lines if you can, and well out of your view and your brake light.

How to put it on

  1. Park in the shade and let the glass cool. Stickers hold badly on hot glass.
  2. Clean the spot on the inside of the glass and dry it fully. Dirt and oil are the main reason stickers fail.
  3. Peel off the backing, holding the sticker by its edges so you do not touch the glue.
  4. Place it, then press from the centre outwards. Push any air bubbles towards the edge.
  5. Press the whole sticker down once more. Do not wash the inside of that glass for a day or two.

These are the usual steps for a vinyl sticker. We have not tested every kind of glass or tint film.

  1. Sign in on your phone, then scan the sticker with the camera. If it is not linked yet, you are asked which of your vehicles it belongs to. Pick one and confirm.
  2. Scan it again. You should now see Your sticker is active, with your plate. Press Send a test alert to check that email and phone alerts reach you.
  3. Ask someone to scan it from a metre or two away. If it will not scan, look for glare, dirt, or a crease across the code, and move the sticker a little.

Selling or changing the vehicle

  1. Open the vehicle page in the app and find your sticker under Your tags. Switch it off.
  2. Peel the sticker off the glass.
  3. The next owner claims the vehicle with their own certificate and gets a sticker of their own.

A switched off sticker can never be linked again. That way, nobody can put it on a different vehicle by mistake.

If a sticker is lost, damaged or peeling

Switch it off in the app first, so no one can use it, then ask us for a new one. You can have up to 5 active stickers on one vehicle.

Please do not

  • Put it on the outside of the glass.
  • Cover your plate, a brake light or any part of your view.
  • Peel it off and move it to another vehicle. A sticker that turns up on the wrong plate is counted as a mismatch, and reports made through it are treated as ordinary photo reports, not sticker reports.
